What to Expect with a Backyard Photo Session

Couple stands around bonfire at night and baby yawns.

Sometimes the best place to get your photos taken can be right in your own backyard…and we mean that literally! One of the reasons we are so excited about introducing this backyard photo session concept more often is because it is so personal to each couple or family.

Family is sitting on a white blanket playing with baby.

It freezes time in a place where you experience day-to-day life.

We are so thankful for the Ferguson family and that we had the beautiful opportunity to share an evening with them. We were welcomed into a part of their lives by photographing the session in their yard. It was so much fun and filled our hearts with joy not only to freeze memories for this amazing family, but to get a snapshot into their lives.

Backyard Photo Session

Photo sessions can happen anywhere (which we LOVE). But we’ve been seeing sessions start to return to their own backyards which is a really cool concept. Why? Because this allows for you to intentionally capture memories of what a night looks like for you and your partner or your family. It is a unique location just for you. No one has photos in that spot.

It feeds genuine, authentic, natural moments to be captured because it is in a place where you’re comfortable. For families, this means that kids will probably be more relaxed because they are in a familiar place doing things that are familiar to them. It’s not far from their norm which cultivates natural interactions.

Of course, with having a session in your backyard, this means you can have all pets present in a few of your photos! From chickens and horses to dogs and cats or anything in between, you can have the animals in your family present without worrying about taking them somewhere.

The thing is, the photos don’t just have to be posed and smiling under a tree in the backyard (although we will probably get a couple of shots of things like that). We encourage you and your partner or your family to pick something to do together in your backyard. Activities are fun and once again, it creates a very natural feeling to the images and the session.

Here are some of our favorite ideas for couples or families:

  • playing outside on the swing/playset
  • blowing bubbles/bubble machine or playing with chalk
  • enjoying a bonfire with s’mores
  • sitting on the porch together with coffee or tea (or iced tea + lemonade!)
  • star gazing
  • outdoor movie night (complete with a projector, popcorn, and movie theater candy, of course)
  • champagne + charcuterie board picnic (or lemonade and sandwiches—whatever you like!)
  • backyard camping

Really, the opportunities are endless. Get creative and have fun!
