5 Outfit Tips for Fall Photo Sessions

Fall is an amazing time to get photos taken between the cooler temps and the gorgeous leaves changing. In fact, fall photo sessions are one of our most popular photo packages! It’s one of the busiest times of the year for photographers and for good reason!

But when you’re gearing up for your session, one of the things that obviously comes up is:

“What should we wear for our fall photo session?”

Picking out an outfit for yourself can be stressful and then when you add on trying to find an outfit for your spouse or maybe your kiddos, it can escalate the stress. We are here to help you with that! Don’t let picking out your outfits be a point of anxiety for you.

5 Tips for Outfits for Fall Photo Sessions:

  1. Find a color palette that you like.
  2. Coordinate your outfits.
  3. Don’t have too many patterns.
  4. Consider the location when picking outfits.
  5. Accessorize!

Find a color palette that you like.

Realistically, you can wear what you want, but these are some color palettes that look good with fall colors: warm neutrals or cool neutrals, alongside a color accent of olive green, navy blue, crimson red, or mustard yellow.

Coordinate your outfits.

It’s not 1986 or 1998 so we don’t need twinning patterns or all dressed in white shirts with blue jeans. See Exhibits A + B.

I mean, we laugh, but who doesn’t have family photos that look like these somewhere in their family?

Anyways, outfit coordination rather than outfit matching is a win for three reasons.

One, it shows individuality. People can wear what they want to express themselves and the style they like, but they still vibe with others in the photos. Want to wear a jumpsuit or a dress? Go for it!

Two, it allows people to pick what colors/styles they look best in. For one session I captured, the colors were warm neutrals with some green as an accent. Someone in the family didn’t own any green. Instead, they picked some of the other neutral colors and wore a pattern that embraced some of the green. It was PERFECT.

Three, it allows for people to reuse things in their closet. Coordinating means that people can usually find something they own that will work and look good with the group without the pressure of going shopping unless they want to. It’s sustainable in that regard!

Don’t have too many patterns.

Patterns are a fun way to spice up a photo and I love it! But too many patterns can be a bit crazy. The temptation for fall photos is that everyone wears plaid.

Having some plaid or a floral pattern can look sharp but be sure that it isn’t overwhelming. I also encourage that the pattern being used is one that has multiple colors to allow for other people to match their solid colors to that pattern.

Depending on the amount of people in the photo will determine how many patterns can be incorporated. If it’s a couple, then usually one person to be in a pattern. If there are five people in the photos, then two or three can be in a pattern depending on that pattern and the positioning of people.

Consider the photo location when picking outfits.

I try to make sure that outfits vibe with your background. It’s important to make sure that what you want to wear fits the setting of your images-both in color and in theme.

If the area for photos has lots of green and tan, let’s embrace that and go with more neutrals or a little bit of yellow, green, or blue.

If the setting for photos has vibrant leaves, depending on the color of the leaves will determine what colors look good. For example, with yellow leaves, navy looks really nice with a little bit of mauve or crimson.

Accessorize your outfits for your fall photo session!

Accessories are FUN! I’m all about adding in hats, headbands, scarves, necklaces, etc. Have fun and bring in the accessories that make you, YOU!
