Couples Photography Sessions + Why They Matter

Couples feel they must have compelling reasons for booking couples photography sessions, but is this how it has to be?

We believe you shouldn’t hesitate to book couples photography sessions no matter if you’ve been together for a month, 5 years, or over 25 years. You don’t need a reason to go on dates, celebrate your relationship, and have photos to document it.

Some reasons that couples feel are worthy of booking couples photography sessions:

  • they’re recently engaged
  • wedding day portraits
  • adopting a new puppy
  • buying their first home

The reasons above are all wonderful seasons of life to have photos taken. We’ve personally done sessions revolving around each of these and we support them 100%!

Married couples should show off their beautiful wedding rings during couples photography sessions.

After this season, the focus usually shifts to family photos. We’ve heard couples say, “We don’t have kids yet, so we aren’t worrying about getting any photos taken together as a couple.”

This couples photography sessions was filled with views of a happy couple, blue skies, and changing leaves.

We’ve noticed that some parents don’t get photos of just the two of them during their family sessions either. (Note: This is something that Jonathan and I ALWAYS encourage couples to do and we are intentional to create time for during family sessions.)

As a couple that does not have kids, this has caused Jonathan and I to ask,

“Is this how it should be?”

I think it speaks into what our society values, which very much focuses on and caters to families. And please know we are not saying that valuing your family is bad. Families are beautiful! We love families!

Our point is this:

We think it’s important that couples joyfully remember what their families are founded on—it all started with their love for one another.

Advice for Couples Photography Sessions:

  1. get dressed up
  2. go on a date
  3. get photos taken
  4. document something you enjoy doing together

We strongly encourage our couples to invest in their marriage and have fun together regularly. And you might as well get photos to document it occasionally!!

We were so excited when Ron contacted us and told us that he wanted to surprise his wife, Brenda, with a photo session for her birthday. We were all about this—how sweet is that?!

Ron was present in the planning process for this gift for Brenda. He even had a spot in mind that was perfect for sunset-Blue Heron Lake at Hummel Park in Plainfield, IN.

When we began planning Brenda + Ron’s session, I gave my usual advice for outfit styling. I mentioned to avoid too many patterns and above all pick something they feel confident in.

We discussed what colors went well together and they ran with it! Ron and Brenda were confident in their outfit choices, and they looked INCREDIBLE!

Ron and Brenda ride their Harley regularly and have been wanting to do a session on their bike for years. To say that we’re glad they went for it is an understatement! They started their session by focusing on the two of them and something they enjoy doing together.

We could see Ron + Brenda’s love for one another by the way they looked at each other. They knew just what to say to make each other laugh and were genuinely themselves.

Ron and Brenda have been together for 29 years and shared: “It takes more than love to have a great marriage. Marriage is hard work and if you’re not willing to work at it every day and change as time goes by, it will never work.”

They shared that it’s important to tell one another that you love each other daily. You don’t have to only give gifts when it’s a “special” day. The Wades have learned that “every day is a special day.”
